FROM THE STREETS TO THE HOUSE – A-PLUS

The 9th Parliament of Ghana will officially commence on January 7th, 2025. Among the new crop of leaders stepping into the house is one particularly intriguing figure: Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-PLUS, and described as one of Ghana’s most politically incorrect politician. His story is a remarkable testament to resilience and transformation, and it carries lessons for all of us.

A-PLUS’s journey from the streets to Parliament is nothing short of inspirational. He often shares his story of leaving his village, hustling on the streets of Accra, and now achieving the monumental feat of becoming a member of Parliament. What’s even more notable is that he’s made it to this position as an independent candidate, not as a representative of any political party. His achievement underscores how far determination and tenacity can take you.

My fascination with A-PLUS’s parliamentary journey lies not just in his success but also in his career trajectory. Often, people from the creative arts and entertainment industry are perceived as unsuited for tackling the complex issues of governance. A-PLUS and a few other political figures both local and international  defy this stereotype. His life demonstrates that it’s not about the field you start in, but how well you excel within it. Excellence in one area creates opportunities to succeed in others.

This brings to mind an important principle: the trick to advancing in life is to focus on doing your current task exceptionally well, regardless of what it is. Once you master one area, you pave the way for new doors to open, leading to greater opportunities and success.

This principle also has profound implications for how we guide the next generation. Many parents worry when their children do not seem inclined toward traditional careers in science, law, or medicine. But such worries are often misplaced. The key question is: What does the child love to do? What excites them? What brings out their passion? What are they good at?

While foundational education is important—every child should learn to read, write, and count—it is equally crucial to recognize and nurture their unique gifts. Success is not determined by what they start with but by how well they pursue and refine their initial interests. When someone excels at their passion, even if it seems mundane or unconventional at first, opportunities for growth and leadership naturally follow.

A-PLUS’s journey exemplifies this truth. Starting as a musician, whose music by the way leaned towards politics and governance, transitioning into a businessman, and now entering Parliament, he has proven that success in one domain can be a stepping stone to achievements in another. His story teaches us the value of persistence, focus, and the courage to defy expectations.

So, to A-PLUS, congratulations on this milestone! You have inspired countless individuals, showing us all that success is not confined to any one path. Instead, it is about mastering where you are and remaining open to the possibilities ahead. Your journey has truly been great, and it is a lesson for us all. Kudos!
