A Heartfelt Letter to My Daughter: Embracing Her First Period Journey
A letter to my Darling girl, on her first period😊
My Darling Girl,
Today is an important day, my love—one that marks a special milestone in your life. You had your first period, a moment so eagerly anticipated by young girls between the ages of 12 and 18, though it can come much earlier or later.
I still remember your curious questions from when you first learned about this topic in school. You told me one of your friends had started hers, and you were so eager, so curious so nervous, for your turn. I reassured you, “Just wait, your time will come.”
Now that it has, I want you to know that this is not just a biological event but the beginning of many new, beautiful experiences. I’m reminded of my own first day. My mother wasn’t around, so I received “The Talk” from your Grandpa, Grandma, and Auntie. They each gave me words of wisdom that I want to pass on to you.
Words of wisdom from my very first day
- From Grandpa(My Father):
Grandpa didn’t mince words. He told me, “You are a woman now, and this means that if a man sleeps with you, you can get pregnant.”
He reminded me that I had my whole life ahead of me and that staying focused on my goals would protect me from distractions and regrets. My darling, I offer you the same advice. Dream big and stay the course. He reminded me that I have a whole world ahead of me, and that if I focused on reaching my goals , I would not find myself pregnant before my time. - From Grandma:
Grandma taught and told me to take care of myself. She said, “Pay attention to your hygiene and change your paddings regularly.”
Back then, we didn’t have the convenience of the pads and tampons you have now, but her advice remains timeless. Take pride in looking after yourself, my love. - From Auntie:
Auntie reminded me, “You’re a lady now, so walk like a lady and talk like a lady.”
She had instilled this lesson in me long before, but it became even more meaningful that day. Carry yourself with grace and confidence, my darling, you are one of the brightest stars in this world.
A Few More Lessons from me to you
Having your period is nothing to be ashamed of; it’s something to celebrate. It is God’s way of ushering you into a new season of life. It’s a sign of your body’s capability to bring forth life, but also a reminder that you are designed to be fruitful in every way—whether in your thoughts, your work, or the impact you make in the world.
At times, this season may come with challenges. Some months might bring pain and discomfort that can leave you feeling drained and sick. But remember, my darling, this is no excuse to let laziness creep in. We’re fortunate to live in a time with many medical and natural remedies to help.
Your grandma, my mother, used to prepare a comforting remedy for me—a soothing mixture of hibiscus leaves, ginger, “prekese”, and “kwawunsosoi”. It helped ease the discomfort, and I’ll gladly make it for you too.
Welcome to Womanhood
I love you, my darling. Welcome to womanhood. This is just the beginning of a new chapter filled with growth, strength, and wisdom. In my next letter, we’ll talk more about what it means to embrace this phase of life.
For now, hold your head high and take pride in this beautiful journey you’ve started.
With all my love,
Yours truly
